  • Please provide a post layout as it appears that there are several ‘bump outs’ in plan-view of the bike path. See plan sheet 21. Plan sheet shows the railing in elevation with the railing on a slope. Segmental / Modular block walls are constructed horizontal in nature with the caps also installed horizontally, which would mean that the top of the wall will be stepping up / down. It would be appropriate to detail the wall illustrating the expected step ups so the railing can be properly estimated
    Due to the grade of the wall in particular within the first 100 plus feet there may be several steps to maintain the profile grade. The location and length of these steps is typically determined by the wall manufacturer which will then be used to determine the rail post location and height. The railing will have to maintain the min 3'-6" above top of headwall. (04/18/2019)

  • X0326998 F&I Handrail: Please review Special Provision page 18 against the details on plans sheet 23. They do not correlate at all. The special provision is calling for an two line aluminum handrail with toe board (without a detail) and plan sheet 23 details a two line steel Pedestrian Rail with a 3” Square frame and extra-large 2” square pickets. Please identify which system you are looking for.

  • Furnish and Install Handrail 431lf- On plan sheet 23 it calls for this railing to be a steel tubing picket rail. The special provisions call for a 2 line aluminum pipe handrail design with mechanical fasteners. Which design is IDOT's intent? RFI #2- The Contract only has 60 Cal Days- This railing will require field measurements after the wall is installed. There is not enough time to FM, detail and fabricate this railing within this time. Can IDOT suspend the CD's to allow for fab? Thanks
    The 2 line aluminum pipe handrail design with mechanical fasteners meets the design intent. The completion time specified includes 60 calendar days plus 5 additional working days to allow for completion of punch list items off the roadway. (04/18/2019)

  • Would it be correct to expect that as a function of the design team, it would run its own calculations meeting LRFD and detail a railing appropriate for use on the project, rather than having this cost included at bid time by the contractor. This way IDOT would know what it is getting before it offers the plans for bid.
