Ask Subscribe Questions and Answers (9 Submitted / 8 Answered ) Questions not accepted as of July 23, 2019 04:30 PM.

  • A name plate is shown on plan sheet 5A and is a pay item. What is the proposed location and method of attachment?
The Name Plate should be located at a viewable point on the inside face of a culvert wingwall, 6 inches from the top slab. See Highway Standard 515001 and Section 515 of the IDOT Standard Specifications.... (07/25/2019)

  • Question #7: Mechanical connectors are mentioned only in the Special Provision for the end sections. So, I read it to mean only the joints connecting the end sections to the barrel are required to mechanically connected. However, you answer to Question #6 says ALL joints are to be mechanically connected. Which should it be?
PRECAST CONCRETE BOX CULVERT AND END SECTIONS indicates that there shall be two mechanical connectors per joint. This should be interpreted as being required for all joints between each of the precast box culvert sections and the end sections. (07/25/2019)

  • Can the plans for the existing structure be made available?
There are no plans available for the existing structure. (07/25/2019)

  • QUESTION #5: Mechanical joint connectors are shown on sheet 5A of the plans. We are not told how many joints are to be connected nor how many connectors per joint. QUESTION #6: Can the headwalls be precast as a separate pieces and attached in the field in the same manner as would be precast toe walls? Do the headwalls nee to parallel the road centerline?
#5: As per the special provision: "There shall be two mechanical connections per joint." All sections should be connected, including the end sections. #6: The headwalls can be precast and installed in the field. They are intended to be constructed in line with the skew of the culvert as shown on plan sheet 5 of 17. This alignment will better accommodate the fill slope along the intersection radii. (07/23/2019)

  • QUESTION #4: ASTM C1577-17 states in Appendix X1.2.3, the last sentence is this paragraph, that if the direction of the live load is greater than 30 degrees from parallel to the span, then a separate analysis must be performed. For this box culvert, the direction of travel is 30 degrees from the span. Will the precaster be required to perform an "additional analysis" to gain approval of shop drawings?
Yes, the ASTM design requirements must be considered on the final culvert design. If the ASTM policy says greater than 30 degrees (not equal to or greater than..), then it would not apply (07/23/2019)

  • QUESTION #1: On page 2 of the Special Provisions, "Culvert Shop Drawings" it says "precast prestressed concrete box culvert plans..." Can I assume this is a typo error? QUESTION #2: Since the precast manufacturer has to provide an IL SE seal on shop drawings, are we free to use whatever slab thickness we deem appropriate for the base, deck and walls? QUESTION #3: Or, does IDOT or the reviewing engineer have minimum slab thicknesses in mind? If so, what might be these minimums?
    1. "prestressed" is a typo. 2. The fabricator and designer of record can modify the slab thickness and cover fill as necessary. We advise they consider the implication to the design profile grade in their slab design thickness and fill allowed for the pavement. 3. There is no minimum design thickness required other than by the AASHTO design code. (07/22/2019)

  • When will these plans and specs be made available?
The plans and special have been reposted. (07/22/2019)

  • Plans and Special Provisions were available to download on July 4th, 2019. They are not available now on July 19th. Are there changes being made to the project? When will the documents be available? If changes are being made will a summery of changes be published?
The plans and special have been reposted. (07/22/2019)
